The project explores the potential of AI-generated narratives and their impact on cultural diversity through immersive VR imagery.
AI is endowed with a role akin to ancient myth-makers, capable of generating narratives rich in fantasy and symbolism. However, these AI-generated narratives exhibit a tendency to erode cultural diversity. Traditional myths, as the collective wisdom of humanity when confronting the unknown, fill cognitive gaps. In contrast, AI’s creativity is limited by its data sources and the biases of dominant cultures, predominantly reflecting the perspectives of economically developed regions and mainstream cultures. Voices and stories from marginalized communities are often sidelined or erased.
Through reimagined mythological storytelling, the project highlights the loss of cultural imagination, particularly the biases inherent in AI-driven, data-based creativity. Traditional folklore, rooted in diversity, locality, and profound human experiences, contrasts sharply with AI-generated narratives, which rely on data filtered through dominant cultural frameworks. This reliance leads to narratives that tend toward standardization and homogenization, lacking representation of marginalized cultures and diverse perspectives.
Not only does this reflect the limitations of technological tools, but it also exacerbates cultural inequalities. The project critiques the hidden biases in data-driven storytelling and examines how technology, often unintentionally, shapes and diminishes cultural diversity and uniqueness. It seeks to provoke deeper reflections on the relationship between technology, culture, and the future of humanity.
